Cottage Life

Image
I picture Cottage Life daylily blooming next to an old milk can or wagon wheel in a garden full of heirloom flowers, or planted near a white-washed fence in front of a country cottage. Heather purple and lilac hues converge in this wide, washed pattern. The soft cream self is trimmed with a purple picotee edge that sprouts random baby teeth. Cottage Life is an evergreen and I think it would do well in warm climate zones. Here in zone 6 near Lake Ontario it has 3 way branching with 15 buds. Fertility is average both ways. 2013 intro.

Gentle Soul

Image
Have you ever known someone so kind you feel better just by picturing their face? Gentle Soul daylily has that same effect. The purple and puffball white pattern is set off by a neutral bisque self. Gentle Soul forms a rounded clump with close offsets, sporting loads of scapes that are held more closely than usual. The effect is a thick cloud of bloom. This looks fine to my eye even with a more modest bud count of 14 buds and 3 way branching. Upon emergence the foliage is blue tinged. Fertility is average both ways. 2013 intro

Totem and Taboo

Image
Totem and Taboo has a pattern of magenta, cream and silver set off by a chartreuse throat and a tomato soup red self. It is named after Freud's controversial work, Totem and Taboo which examines the anthropological origins of sexual taboos. The plant is a strong northern grower and spreader with clean foliage. With well-spaced 4 way branching and 25 buds the flowers are held without crowding, a look I prefer to an overloaded scape. Supremely fertile both ways, the pods set even on hot days and are loaded with firm, shiny seeds. 2013 intro.

Seedling x Four Beasts in One

$100 Available

Four Beasts in One

Image
Four Beasts in One has held my interest over time. It does funny things like going all metallic or suddenly donning two silly striped eyebrows. Four Beasts in One is named after a story by Poe about a ruthless emperor whose dominion was besieged by four beasts. The pattern often breaks into four cycles. This is my most important pattern breeder and its kids are typically healthy and strong northern seedlings. It is a cool morning opener.
The foliage is deep green and somewhat arching. It has up to 5 branches and 42 buds but typically about 25 buds per scape. 2010 intro.

Jinxy

Image

Jinxy is full of mischief, strategizing for your attention by the day. Cool purple pools traced with flint gray and lavender are so dreamy you melt. Next it breaks into butterfly wings or shocks you with flashing metallic glints. The fragrance is spicy and strong. Jinxy is sunfast and a cool morning opener. As a plant it has many good qualities - 4 way branching with 28 buds and good disease resistance. It has a tendency to generate proliferations. Fertility is high and pods are commonly loaded with seeds. 2012 intro.

I Don't Kid

Image
The combination and richness of color is unusual, no kidding about that. I Don't Kid has a peach self with a wine, purple and blue pattern emanating from a gold throat. It is lightly ruffled and has a nice textural quality. 3 way branching with 17 buds. 2011 intro.

Image
Emotional Butter is a strawberry pattern with hints of blueberry and silver on a rich butter base. It makes me think of all the things I like to spread on toast. 3 way branching with 16 buds. 2009 intro.

My first introduction, Bee Buzzes has a sorrel red and silk white pattern on a primrose yellow self. It occasionally exhibits some amazing silver metallic glints in the light areas of the pattern. 2008 intro.
